The typical chart chronicles the price path of a currency pair over the months and years and charts a lot of information technicians can use. Yet, there forex another way to view currency charts, and that is to seasonality at them in a seasonal fashion. So what are forex seasonality patterns, or forex seasonal charts? For our purposes, seasonality is the tendency of a currency to bottom or top at certain points in the year. Instead of looking at the last 30 years of currency data in chronological order, what if you took each year January to December and charts put each year on top of each other. Those clear sheets which were used for making presentations with a projector. Imagine each year of data on a transparency sheet, and then stacking them all on top of each other. This will create a sort of average and show tendencies within the Japanese Yen JPY in forex possibly not seen by looking normal charts. The seasonality data is taken and, as shown below, set to an initial value of to provide one line which shows how the currency acts on average between January and December, over the last 30 years below we will look at the 5, 10, 15, forex and 30 year averages. Will the average show a forex seasonal pattern where the Japanese Yen JPY generally turns higher in certain months, or turns lower in others? Below we look at the JPY or Yen Futures, but note that since the Yen futures are traded relative to US dollars, we can use patterns seen in the futures market seasonality trade USDJPY seasonality patterns. Therefore, this information can be used in both the futures and forex market. Yen Futures will move with the JPYUSD forex pair. Since most traders look at this pair the other charts direction of Yen Futures is seasonality that of the USDJPY. As Yen futures rally, the USDJPY will fall. There are indeed consistent USDJPY seasonal patterns, and we can see seasonality patterns by looking at the following seasonal chart of Yen Futures. These seasonal tendencies can be used find opportune times to trade the USDJPY seasonality pair or Yen Futures. At the end we will go over the major seasonal patterns of the Yen Futures and also the USDJPY seasonal patterns so there is no confusion. The chart shows the tendencies seasonality the Yen over the last 5 years, 10 years and 15 years. As we can see each average provides a different line, and this is important to understand about seasonality— it is an average, not a rule. For the sake of thoroughness we can also use more data to make sure that the 5, 10, 15 year USDJPY seasonality patterns align with the longer-term 20 and 30 year USDJPY seasonal patterns. Therefore, we are only looking for seasonality patterns which occur on all—5, 10, 15, seasonality and 30 year—time frames. From the factors above we can isolate a few times in the year which are likely turning points. After, we will flip them around so the tendencies can be used for trading the USDJPY. The USDJPY seasonal pattern is affected by the multi-decade downtrend in the USDJPY, which is why much of the time the JPY is shown appreciating on the seasonal charts. Seasonality is not a tool to use on its own, but rather seasonality be combined with price analysis forex analysis to determine entry and exit points. Yet seasonality does provide us with windows of time where we can watch for trend reversals and feel more confident if we see a price pattern that indicates a reversal during the seasonal windows provided above. It is important to keep the overall trend of the market in mind. In up trends use charts low forex to buy. In overall down trends, use seasonal forex points to get short or to sell.
